You know what it’s like: you’re reading a news story on the web and you think “that’s interesting — I really want to know more”.

That can be hard, though. Despite millions of new stories every day, the news you get often lacks the context you need.

To help solve this dilemma, we’re entering a project in this year's Knight News Challenge — and it's called Contextify.

What we do

At Contextify, we’re building tools that can give you the best context for the news.

News outlets are pretty good at recommending their own “related stories” or linking to themselves, but that doesn’t mean readers are getting the bigger picture.

By analysing millions of articles online, we can find the stories that tell you what’s really happening in the stories you care about. By applying a series of technological, social and editorial filters, we can help you get to the best and most informative writing.

And if we succeed, you’ll be able to unearth the finest journalism about any topic, as well helping you to understand whether the news you’re reading is accurate and authentic.

The Bottom Line

If you’re a reader, Contextify will find the best information about the news stories that are important to you.

If you’re a publisher, Contextify will shed light on great material that might otherwise be gathering dust — as well as offering tools to help you build our system into your own pages.

THE CHALLENGE: Each year, the Knight News Challenge awards grants to public interest projects and ideas that “advance the future of news”.
THIS YEAR: We think Contextify will be an important part of that future. But we can't get there without your help.
HELP US: Read our submission, comment on it and — if you think we've got something — vote for us, using the links below.

The greatest felony in the news business today is to be behind, or to miss a big story. So speed and quantity substitute for thoroughness and quality, for accuracy and context.
